Meet the Instructors

Michaela Ahrens

Vice President of Operations, Autism Action Partnership

Michaela Ahrens is an Omaha native and graduate of Creighton University with over 30 years of nonprofit experience dedicated to helping children and families overcome challenges and reach their full potential. As the Vice President of Operations for Autism Action Partnership, Michaela has spent the last 8 years leading efforts to advance inclusion and sensory accessibility in the community. She has developed and delivered training programs for diverse professionals—including performing arts venues, youth program staff, first responders, and health and dental providers. Michaela also created the COMPASS Partner program, which evaluates inclusive practices and recognizes local venues that commit to ongoing improvement. A passionate advocate for the autism community, fueled by her nephew's journey on the spectrum, Michaela holds a master’s degree in psychology and is a Certified Autism Specialist.

Kelly Nielsen

Education & Outreach Manager, Autism Action Partnership

Kelly Nielsen was born and raised in Omaha and is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. As a former special education teacher, she brings firsthand experience supporting neurodivergent individuals and their families. In her role as Education & Outreach Manager at Autism Action Partnership, Kelly develops and leads training, technical assistance, and consultation to equip professionals, educators, and community organizations with tools to create more inclusive spaces. She also supports the COMPASS Partner program, helping evaluate inclusive practices and recognize venues committed to ongoing improvement. Her passion for this work is deeply personal, as the mother of a son with autism, and she is dedicated to fostering understanding and belonging for all.
